Chaos of a Mind: The Mind Gone Awry

What happens when the world is not right? When you see it wrong? When you forget? When you deceive someone? When you make a mistake?

Work 2011 - 2012
"Guilty Conscience", 18x24, Acrylic, oil, and paper
The conscience is normally thought to be this omniscient part of the brain that seeks out right from wrong, guiding us in the right direction. But really, it is just knowledge of the wrong that moves us in the right direction. We fear guilt; it is necrotic - eating at our very core until we feel so raw, so exposed, that we cannot stand it.
"Societal Delusions". 24x48, mixed media.
Delusions, unlike what a psychologist might say, are actually quite common in our lives. In fact, delusions create us, define us, as a society. As children, we are bombarded with delusions of stories like Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, even fairy tales like Rapunzel in the tower, Littler Red Riding Hood. As we age, the delusions morph, but the ultimate cuase of the false perceptions are the same: the media. Advertising, political cartoons, pop culture - all of these have a major effect on the subconscious delusions we form about ourselves and each other. Propaganda is our culture, our society, making the shadow of "us".
"Forgetting, A Memory Release". 18x24, oil pastel.
Memories, at their core, define who we are: they are a part of us. So when we forget, we are losing a part of ourselves. In most cases, we never really realize that we are forgetting until it is too late, when we can only remember the hole that forgotten memory has left. There is hope, however, that the memory will fly back into your body, make you whole once more.
Stencil, ~18x24. Spray paint print.

"Wind me up before the sand runs out."
As someone suffering from cyclothymia, I experience firsthand the problems of depression. I will periodically fall into a depression so deep that I just want to sleep the world away. I have learned through experience that sometimes, all I need is a subtle touch, a voice - something - to set me in the right direction, to wind me up and help me keep going.
